Comic Science Improv is a north Alabama-based comedy troupe born out of Huntsville. The troupe performs every first Friday of the month with a random Saturday show thrown in. Hilarity ensues at every show. We met up with director David Hitt for a quick Q&A about his talented group of people.
The Charger Times: So, how did Comic Science Improv get started?
David Hitt: Comic Science Improv was born out of Face2Face Improv, a troupe that performed in the Huntsville area for 10 years. When the director closed that troupe down last year, the players decided we were enjoying ourselves too much and didn’t want to stop, so we formed a new troupe. Since then, we’ve created some new games for the shows, added some really talented new players, and performed at some new venues. Longtime improv fans will find some familiar stuff they love at a Comic Science show, but there’s a lot of exciting new stuff going on, too.
CT: What are your goals in doing the shows?
Hitt: The great thing about improv comedy is that it’s based on suggestions that come from the audience, so that each show is basically custom-tailored for the people that are there that night. We act out scenes about the things the people at that show want to see. One of our goals is really to provide a live entertainment option that anyone can enjoy. There are some great live comedy things going on in Huntsville right now, and we’re just trying to provide one more option with a different feel.
CT: What do you expect for the future of your group?
Hitt: We’ve been really pleasantly surprised at the momentum we’ve been building over the last few months. Word about what we’re doing is starting to get around, and we’re seeing repeat customers at our shows bringing new friends to the audience. Our main goal for the troupe, to be honest, is just for us to have a lot of fun doing something we all really love, and for as many people as possible to have the opportunity to come have fun with us. And, along the way, for people to laugh a lot.
CT: When is the next show?
Hitt: We perform shows at Acting Up Academy in Huntsville on the first Friday of every month at 7:30 p.m., so our next show is on March 1. We also schedule the occasional special Saturday show for people who can’t come on Fridays, and the next one of those will be at Angel’s Island Coffee Shop on Saturday, March 16. More information about upcoming shows will be available on our website — www.comicscienceimprov — and Facebook page — facebook.com/comicscienceimprov .
At every Comic Science Improv show, the audience is almost guaranteed to leave with a permanent grin across their face. Also, mention this article when you buy your tickets, and receive a $1 off coupon for any future shows!
